Forty-Six

Marcus

We turned down a less crowded street. One of the doors I tried was unlocked so I pulled at Trudy’s arm and pointed at the door. I slowly twisted the knob and pushed the door in. It was totally dark and no sounds were coming from inside, so I quickly pulled Trudy in and put my finger to my lips and very quietly went, “Shhhh.” I quickly looked outside and all around to make sure no one was following us and then shut the door. I waited a moment for my eyes to adjust and started looking around. It was some type of warehouse, full of boxes and junk. It was damp and musty and water sat in puddles on the floor. But more important, there were no lights and no one was home. I whispered to Trudy to look for a place to hold up; she nodded her head in understanding. We started going down the rows looking for any place to hide. It was cluttered with all types and sizes of boxes with junk mixed in between them. We had to move slowly for fear of running into something. We made it to the end of the wall and turned left. I grabbed Trudy’s hand and continued on. By this time the humidity was overwhelming and we were sweating profusely. The thing I was worried about was that we had no source of water. I knew I was already feeling faint and was sure Trudy was as well. We dared not speak, for fear of someone overhearing us. We ran into a door and I opened it and looked in. It looked like a bathroom and I couldn’t believe our luck. Trudy said, “Don’t even think about it. I am going first.” She went in and shut the door. I waited patiently.

She came out in a few minutes and whispered, “It smells horrible and it’s very gross. But it does work, even the water works.”

I was so thirsty I could care less where I was getting the water. I went in and felt around until I found an overhead light string. I pulled it and looked around. Not only did it stink horribly, but it was about as filthy as one could imagine. I did my thing and drank all I wanted. At least for now, we had a restroom and water. Now we needed a hiding place and food. When I got out of the restroom, Trudy was waiting for me. We headed in a new direction hoping to find a hiding place. I saw another door in the corner and I put my ear to it. I didn’t hear anything on the other side, so I slowly open it and peered inside.

It looked like the beginning of a stairway to a basement. I grabbed Trudy’s hand and went down the creaking wooden steps. I tried to go slow but it still made some noise. We went down about twenty steps and were stopped by a wall. The stairs turned right and went down again.
